Movies

The key to matching movies is including the release year. This prevents confusion between remakes, reboots, and films with common titles. The year acts as a unique identifier alongside the title.

  • Title (Year).ext — The gold standard
  • Snow-White (1933).mkv — Hyphen in original title
  • His Girl Friday (1940).mkv
  • Charade (1963).mkv
  • Safety Last! (1923).mkv

Why Year Matters

Without the year, 'Snow White' could match to any of dozens of films from 1916 to 2025. With the year, you get the exact version you have. This is especially critical for public domain films and theatrical shorts.

  • Snow White (1933) — Betty Boop cartoon
  • Snow White (1937) — Disney animated classic
  • Snow White (2012) — Modern action film
  • Snow White (2025) — Disney live-action remake
  • Year filtering eliminates false matches

TV Shows

TV episodes need both season and episode numbers. The standard format ensures correct matching to the right episode in the right season.

  • Show Name - S01E01 - Episode Title.ext
  • Breaking Bad - S01E01 - Pilot.mkv
  • The Office - S02E05 - Halloween.mkv
  • Game of Thrones - S08E06 - The Iron Throne.mkv
  • Season folders optional but recommended

Alternative TV Formats

Some shows use different numbering schemes. These formats are also supported for flexibility.

  • Show.Name.S01E01.Episode.Title.ext — Dots work too
  • Show Name 1x01 Episode Title.ext — 1x01 format
  • Show Name [01x01] Episode Title.ext — Bracketed
  • Consistency within a show matters most

Theatrical Shorts

Classic cartoon shorts from studios like Fleischer, Terrytoons, and Warner Bros are cataloged as individual movies, not TV episodes. Name them like movies with the year.

  • The Mouse of Tomorrow (1942).mp4 — Mighty Mouse origin
  • Superman (1941).mkv — Fleischer Superman
  • Kickin' the Conga Round (1942).mkv — Popeye short
  • Poor Cinderella (1934).mkv — Betty Boop
  • Treat each short as a standalone film

Music Files

For music, embedded metadata (ID3 tags) takes priority over filenames. But clean filenames help when tags are missing or incorrect.

  • Artist - Album - 01 - Track Title.flac
  • Folder structure: Artist/Album/tracks
  • Track numbers help with ordering
  • Embedded tags are preferred when present

Characters to Avoid

Some characters cause problems on certain file systems or confuse parsers. Stick to safe characters for maximum compatibility.

  • Avoid: \ / : * ? " < > |
  • Replace colons with dashes: Robot Wars 3 - Director's Cut
  • Apostrophes are fine: Murphy's Gold (1940).mkv
  • Accented characters work: Café Lumière (1948).mkv

Common Mistakes

These naming patterns cause matching failures. Avoid them for reliable automatic matching.

  • Missing year: The Matrix.mkv — Which Matrix?
  • Wrong year: Dune (1984).mkv for the 2021 film
  • Release info in title: Movie.2021.1080p.BluRay.mkv
  • No separators: TheMatrix1999.mkv
  • Episode without season: Show E01.mkv
