Video Codecs

From DVDs ripped a decade ago to the latest 4K HDR remuxes. If it's a video file, we almost certainly play it. When transcoding to AV1, SVT-AV1 software encoding provides 30-50% smaller files even on servers without modern GPUs.

  • H.264 / AVC — Universal compatibility
  • H.265 / HEVC — 4K HDR standard
  • VP9 — YouTube and web video
  • AV1 — Next-gen efficiency (iPhone 15+)
  • MPEG-2 — DVD and broadcast
  • MPEG-4 / Xvid — Legacy files
  • VC-1 — Blu-ray era
  • ProRes — Professional workflows

HDR Formats

High dynamic range isn't just one thing. We support them all, with proper metadata handling and display detection.

  • Dolby Vision — Profile 5, 7, 8
  • HDR10 — Static metadata
  • HDR10+ — Dynamic metadata
  • HLG — Broadcast HDR

Audio Codecs

Lossy for compatibility, lossless for quality, and object-based for immersion. Your audio, your way.

  • Dolby TrueHD / Atmos — Lossless surround
  • DTS-HD MA / DTS:X — Lossless surround
  • FLAC — Lossless stereo/multichannel
  • ALAC — Apple Lossless
  • AAC / MP3 / Opus — Lossy compatibility
  • AC3 / E-AC3 — Dolby Digital
  • DTS — DTS Digital Surround
  • PCM — Uncompressed

Containers

The file extension matters less than what's inside. We handle them all.

  • MKV — Matroska, the collector's choice
  • MP4 / M4V — Apple and web standard
  • MOV — QuickTime
  • AVI — Legacy but supported
  • TS / M2TS — Broadcast and Blu-ray
  • WebM — Web video
  • WMV — Windows Media
  • FLV — Flash era

Subtitles

Text-based subtitles render natively. Bitmap subtitles get extracted and overlaid. Either way, you see them.

  • SRT — Simple, universal
  • ASS / SSA — Styled with fonts and colors
  • VTT — Web standard
  • PGS — Blu-ray image-based
  • VobSub — DVD image-based
  • Embedded and external files

Direct Play vs Transcode

We always try direct play first. Your device's hardware decoder handles the heavy lifting, preserving quality and saving server resources. Transcoding only kicks in when there's a genuine incompatibility—and even then, we do the minimum necessary.

  • Direct play is always attempted first
  • Hardware decoding on all Apple devices
  • Selective transcoding (video or audio only)
  • Original quality preserved when possible
