Apple Devices

Native apps for iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac, and Apple Watch. Full hardware acceleration via VideoToolbox with Metal-based real-time tone mapping. EDR headroom detection for XDR displays ensures HDR content looks stunning on Pro Display XDR and MacBook Pro with Liquid Retina XDR.

  • iOS 17.0+ (iPhone XS and later, 2018)
  • iPadOS 17.0+ (iPad Pro 3rd gen and later)
  • tvOS 17.0+ (Apple TV HD and later, 2015)
  • macOS 14.0+ Sonoma (Intel and Apple Silicon)
  • watchOS (remote control and Now Playing)
  • VideoToolbox H.264/HEVC/ProRes hardware encoding
  • Dolby Vision native passthrough on capable devices
  • HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, Dolby Vision Profile 5/7/8/9

Web Browsers

Stream directly in your browser with automatic codec negotiation. HDR detection uses dynamic range media queries with Rec.2020 color gamut heuristics for XDR displays. Falls back gracefully to SDR with server-side tone mapping when needed.

  • Safari 17+ (macOS/iOS): Native HLS, HEVC hardware decode, HDR
  • Chrome 120+: MSE, H.264, VP9, AV1
  • Firefox 120+: MSE, H.264, VP9
  • Edge 120+: Same capabilities as Chrome
  • H.264: Universal browser support
  • HEVC: Safari, Edge (hardware accelerated)
  • VP9: Chrome, Firefox, Edge
  • AV1: Chrome 120+, Firefox 120+, Safari 17+

Server Requirements

Run on anything from a Raspberry Pi to a dedicated server. The server is a single binary with no runtime dependencies. Hardware transcoding dramatically reduces CPU usage but isn't required—software encoding works everywhere.

  • Minimum: 2 CPU cores, 4GB RAM, 10GB storage
  • NVIDIA NVENC: GTX 1650 or better
  • AMD AMF: RX 5000 series or better
  • Intel Quick Sync: 6th gen Core or better, Arc GPUs
  • Apple VideoToolbox: Any Apple Silicon Mac
  • Linux ARM: VAAPI, V4L2-M2M (Raspberry Pi)
  • Software fallback: SVT-AV1, x264, x265
  • Docker and native packages available

HDR & Dolby Vision

Pixelbrite plays Dolby Vision content on any device. On Dolby Vision-capable displays, you get the full HDR experience via native passthrough. On other devices, we automatically convert to SDR with accurate color reproduction using industry-standard tone mapping algorithms.

  • Dolby Vision Profile 5/7/8/9 playback
  • HDR10, HDR10+, HLG support
  • Server: libplacebo GPU tone mapping (Vulkan)
  • Server: zscale CPU tone mapping fallback
  • Client: Metal shader real-time processing
  • User-selectable algorithms: Hable, Reinhard, BT.2390, ACES
  • Automatic SDR fallback for non-HDR displays
  • Native DV passthrough on capable devices

Resolution & Bitrate

Stream at the quality your device and network support. Direct play preserves original quality with zero server processing. When transcoding is needed, hardware acceleration keeps CPU usage minimal.

  • Apple TV 4K: Up to 4K @ 150 Mbps
  • iPhone/iPad: Up to 4K @ 100 Mbps (display limited)
  • Mac: Up to 8K, unlimited bitrate (native playback)
  • Web (Chrome/Firefox): Up to 4K @ 50 Mbps (MSE limits)
  • Web (Safari): Up to 4K @ 100 Mbps (native HLS)
  • Automatic quality adaptation based on network
  • Per-device quality preferences
  • Bandwidth management for remote streaming

Audio Formats

Full support for modern audio formats with automatic transcoding when needed. Surround sound passthrough for home theater systems, stereo downmix for mobile devices.

  • Dolby Atmos / TrueHD passthrough
  • DTS:X / DTS-HD MA passthrough
  • AAC, AC-3, E-AC-3 (Dolby Digital Plus)
  • FLAC, ALAC lossless audio
  • Opus, Vorbis (WebM containers)
  • Automatic stereo downmix for mobile
  • Multi-channel audio track selection
  • Audio delay adjustment

Container Formats

Play virtually any video file format. The server automatically handles container conversion when needed, extracting streams without re-encoding when possible.

  • MKV (Matroska): Full support including attachments
  • MP4/M4V: Native Apple device compatibility
  • AVI, MOV, WMV, FLV, WebM
  • MPEG-TS for broadcast recordings
  • ISO/IMG disc images (future)
  • Automatic remuxing to compatible containers
  • Subtitle extraction and conversion
  • Chapter markers preserved
